Regions of Georgia

Georgia is too big for one forecast. The state splits into 8 regions, each with its own site — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record, scoped to the counties that actually share a sky. Every city in a region gets its own page underneath it.

Northwest Georgia
The Ridge & Valley · I-75 · Northwest Georgia
OPEN →
The ridges here run southwest to northeast, exactly along the track the spring storms take out of Alabama, and they steer them. This is the northern end of Dixie Alley: the April 2011 outbreak put a long-track tornado through Catoosa and Walker counties, and the same valleys hold the cold air that turns a Piedmont rain into an ice storm.

Georgia's only real mountain weather. Brasstown Bald tops 4,784 feet, these counties collect twice the snow of Atlanta, and the ridges wring out the rain that feeds the Chattahoochee and the Toccoa. When a tropical system tracks up from the Gulf it stalls against this wall — which is how Helene put the Nottely and the Toccoa over their banks.

Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell make their own weather, and the Piedmont here is where the ice line usually stops. Gainesville has the deadliest tornado in Georgia's history on its record — 1936, more than 200 dead — and the spring severe season still runs this corridor every year, generally after dark and under the trees.

Augusta
The Garden City · I-20 · The Savannah River
OPEN →
Augusta sits on the fall line where the Piedmont drops to the coastal plain, and the river is the reason for the city and the flood risk both. Summers here run as hot and humid as anywhere in the state, hurricanes still arrive inland with a full day of wind and rain, and the ice storms come down the I-20 corridor.

Columbus
The Fountain City · I-185 · The Chattahoochee
OPEN →
The valley is the first thing Alabama's weather hits after it crosses the river, and it hits at night. This is the eastern edge of Dixie Alley, where spring supercells arrive after dark under the trees, and where the remnants of Gulf hurricanes still turn into a day of wind and flooding well inland.

Middle Georgia
The Fall Line · I-75 · The Heart of Georgia
OPEN →
Middle Georgia sits right on the fall line, the seam where the red clay Piedmont gives way to the sandy coastal plain, and it catches weather from both directions — severe lines running down from Atlanta and tropical systems coming up from the Gulf and the Atlantic, often with nothing left to stop them.

Savannah
The Hostess City · I-95 · The Golden Isles
OPEN →
The Georgia Bight curves inward here, which is exactly why the surge runs so high — the coast catches water and pushes it up the tidal rivers, and Savannah's tides are the largest in the South Atlantic. Matthew, Irma and Dorian all made that clear inside four years.

South Georgia
The Plains & Wiregrass · I-75 · South Georgia
OPEN →
South Georgia is close enough to the Gulf and the Atlantic that both reach it. Michael came through here in 2018 still a hurricane, 90 miles inland, and flattened pecan groves and cotton across these counties. The rest of the year it is heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and the spring tornado risk that runs with the Dixie Alley pattern.
